Type Locality and Naming

Turpan-Hami region. The type section is located in the vicinity of Shengjinkou ~90 km west of Shanshan County, Xinjiang. the Compilation Team of the “Regional Stratigraphic Table of the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region in 1987.


Lithology and Thickness

Lower part consists of light brownish red or yellowish brown mudstone and sandy mudstone with brownish yellow or grayish green sandstone and grayish red conglomerate lenses and the base is sometimes marked by conglomerate or pebbly sandstone. Upper part is composed of yellowish brown mudstone and grayish red muddy sandstone with grayish green sandstone and conglomerate, locally intercalated with thin-bedded yellowish brown marlstone. The thickness is ~20 to 900 m.

Relationships and Distribution

Lower contact

It has a disconformable contact with the underlying Taoshuyuanzi Fm.

Upper contact

It has a conformable or disconformable contact with the overlying Quaternary Xiyu Fm.

Regional extent

It is distributed in the Turpan Basin.

Fossils

Ostracods: Candona, Paracandona, Eucypris, Ilyocypris and Cypridopsis


Age 

Quite a few people think it to be Pliocene in age, but according to its contained ostracod fauna and the overlying and underlying horizons, the possibility that it also includes Miocene deposits cannot be ruled out.
